We The People

Created during UNF’s Blocktober, this woodblock, measuring 8 ft. by 4 ft., was carved and printed on the sidewalk of FSCJ using a steamroller. The theme of the event was Art + Politics. At the time—and even now—immigrants continue to be targeted and undervalued for their hard work, despite being one of the foundational pillars of this country. This piece was also part of the MOCA Museum exhibition Art + Politics: Grounding Dialogue in 2024.
Below, I’ve shared some photos of the process!

Manifesto:

In an increasingly interconnected world, where the boundaries between nations seem to grow ever more artificial, we find ourselves standing at a crucial crossroads. It is a moment in history when we must reaffirm our commitment to the ideals that have propelled societies forward for generations. We must celebrate unity beyond borders, embrace diversity as an enriching force, extend empathy and inclusion to immigrants, ensure equal opportunities for all, and champion the freedom to soar. Like the Monarch butterfly, which traverses continents with unwavering determination, our manifesto stands for the principles that unite us as a global community.

Just as the Monarch butterfly knows no division by artificial borders when it undertakes its remarkable journey, we recognize the interconnectedness of humanity. We reject the notion that our shared world should be fragmented by walls and boundaries. Instead, we strive to build bridges, not walls, and foster a sense of unity that transcends geographical lines. Our vision is one of a world where the richness of diverse cultures and perspectives is celebrated, where the ties that bind us together are strengthened, and where humanity stands as one.

Immigration is an undeniable testament to the fact that diversity enriches our societies. When immigrants journey to new lands, they bring with them unique cultures, experiences, and talents. These contributions are the lifeblood of innovation, creativity, and progress. Our manifesto celebrates the tapestry of human diversity, which weaves together the threads of various cultures to create a more vibrant and dynamic world.

Every individual, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to grow and contribute to their adopted nation. We champion the principle of equal opportunity, where merit and potential are the only determining factors in a person's success. Regardless of where one comes from, we believe in a world where individuals are judged based on their character, abilities, and aspirations, rather than their place of birth.

Just as the Monarch butterfly takes to the skies on its migratory path, we advocate for the freedom of movement and the pursuit of dreams, no matter where they may lead. We believe that everyone should have the right to seek out new horizons, to explore and discover, and to follow their aspirations with determination and hope. Our world should be one where individuals are free to soar to new heights, uninhibited by constraints of their origins.
